Whether you are an aspiring governance or risk practitioner looking to expand your knowledge, or a senior level practitioner who needs to keep their skills up to date — there is a membership for you with Governance Institute.
Affiliated membership
Who is this suitable for?
This membership is suitable for early career practitioners and members who are primarily interested in full access to practical benefits like membership discounts and resources.
Affiliated members are entitled to use the postnominals GIA(Affiliated) and receive access to all our membership benefits.
Qualifying pathways though study with Governance Institute
All certificates below provide a pathway to Affiliated membership.
- Certificate in Governance Practice
- Certificate in Governance and Risk Management
- Certificate in Governance for Not-For-Profits
- Certificate in Company Secretary Essentials
- Effective Director Course
Completion of any 3 postgraduate subjects
Completion of any Governance Institute postgraduate certificate or diploma (if you’ve completed postgraduate study we would recommend apply for Associate or Fellow membership).
Qualifying pathways for Professional Entry
If you’ve completed tertiary or TAFE level qualifications in a related field (related could include, but is not limited to the list below):
- Business
- Law
- Administration
- Accounting and finance
- Commerce, actuarial studies, and economics
- Risk management
- Corporate governance and risk management
- MBA or Executive-MBA
You’re eligible to enter as an Affiliated member. If you have tertiary qualification and worked for 6+ years in governance or risk you may want to consider Associate or Fellow membership

Associate and Fellow membership
Who is Associate membership suitable for?
This membership is suitable for mid-career practitioners and consultants who would like to showcase governance or risk experience.
Associate members are entitled to use postnominals AGIA and receive access to all our membership benefits.
Who is Fellow membership suitable for?
This membership is suitable for senior practitioners, CEOs and senior management, consultants and non-executive directors.
Fellow members are entitled to use the postnominals FGIA and receive access to all our membership benefits. In addition, Fellow members may receive invitations to roundtables, may be eligible to apply for board or committee positions with Governance Institute.
Eligible qualifications for Governance Institute students
Completion of the postgraduate courses below will provide a pathway to Associate or Fellow membership:

Former courses
- Graduate Certificate of Applied Risk Management
- Graduate Diploma of Applied Risk Management for Corporate Management

Eligible qualifications for Professional Entry
Completing tertiary qualifications in fields related to governance or risk management provides a pathway to Associate or Fellow Membership:
- Business
- Law
- Administration
- Accounting and finance
- Commerce, actuarial studies, and economics
- Risk management
- Corporate governance and risk management
- MBA or Executive-MBA
Experience in governance or risk management
You will need to demonstrate a minimum of six years experience in governance or risk management fields. This can include (but isn’t limited to):
- non-executive directorships
- audit and compliance experience
- governance or risk framework development
- company secretary experience
Fellow membership may be awarded:
- for Governance Institute graduates if you have 8+ years of governance and risk management experience
- for Professional entry applicants if you have 10+ years of governance and risk management experience
Where the six year experience threshold isn’t met you will automatically be eligible for Affiliated membership instead and may advance to Associate membership once the requirement is met.
Chartered Governance Institute memberships
If you have completed the Graduate Certificate or Diploma of Applied Corporate Governance and Risk Management, you may also apply for membership to our international partner The Chartered Governance Institute (CGI)
Governance Institute of Australia administers the Australian division of The Chartered Governance Institute, so you can apply to be a member of both organisations on the same application form.

Affiliated CGI membership
You may be eligible to become an Affiliated member of The Chartered Governance Institute if you have:
Completed the Graduate Diploma of Applied Corporate Governance and Risk Management
OR
You have a minimum of two years’ experience in governance or risk management fields AND hold a professional or pre-professional qualification in a related discipline (e.g. tertiary qualification).
Members are entitled to use the postnominals CG(Affiliated) but are not entitled to use any chartered designation. For full information on Affiliated rights under The Chartered Governance Institute please read the Charter.
Associate CGI membership
To become an Associate member of The Chartered Governance Institute, you need to complete the new Graduate Diploma of Applied Corporate Governance and Risk Management or the former Graduate Diploma of Applied Corporate Governance
You will need to demonstrate a minimum of three years’ experience in governance or risk management fields. This can include (but isn’t limited to):
- non-executive directorships
- audit and compliance experience
- governance or risk framework development
- company secretary experience
If you become a member, you will be entitled to use the postnominals ACG and use the Chartered designation as per their qualifying program:
- Chartered Governance Professional
- Chartered Secretary
Fellow CGI membership
To become a Fellow member of The Chartered Governance Institute, you will need to complete the new Graduate Diploma of Applied Corporate Governance and Risk Management or the former Graduate Diploma of Applied Corporate Governance provides a pathway to Fellow membership.
You will need to demonstrate a minimum of five years’ experience in governance or risk management fields. This can include (but isn’t limited to):
- Non-executive directorships
- audit and compliance experience
- governance or risk framework development
- company secretary experience
If you become a member, you will be entitled to use the postnominals FCG and are entitled to use Chartered designations as per their qualifying program:
- Chartered Governance Professional
- Chartered Secretary
