The Certificate in Governance Practice is designed and taught by leading experts and practitioners in the field of governance and provides an introduction to governance fundamentals.  

The Certificate is made up of four core subjects and two electives. The program is interactive – learn from the experiences of the facilitator, from your peers and by examining case studies which will support your post-course application of knowledge in the workplace.   

For those newly appointed or aspiring to the role of Company Secretary or Senior Managers who are seeking to gain a clear understanding of the legal responsibilities, obligations and duties of the role, this Certificate program is perfect for you. You will gain practical skills that you can immediately use to consolidate your current position or to launch a new career in this exciting field. 

This course is designed for: 

  • new company secretary or governance professionals wanting to formalise their knowledge 

  • aspiring governance professionals 

  • experienced C-suite executive or an executive assistant. 

After attending the course, you will: 

  • Understand the duties of offices and directors and interplay between boards and management 

  • The skills required to read and understand financial statements 

  • the knowledge and tools to identify and analyse key risks that may affect your organisation 

  • Walk away with practical tools and tips on governance and risk management matters 

  • Explore the frameworks and the theory behind best practice governance practise 

  • Network with peers and our experienced facilitators

How is this course delivered:

We offer the opportunity to complete this highly regarded Certificate in a convenient, intensive mode of study face-to-face with your peers in Melbourne over three consecutive days. Catering and networking opportunities are provided throughout breaks and as we put you into groups to work through case studies.

Over three days, you’ll complete the following mix of core and elective short courses: 

Day 1
Governance Essentials
Duties of Officers and Directors

Day 2
Financial Analysis for Officers and Directors
Assessing, Analysing and Treating Risk

Day 3 
Meeting ASX Listing Rules Requirements - elective
Legal Framework of Governance - elective

You can register for the preferred short course electives that best suit your needs. Delivery of our short courses can be online, virtual via zoom or face to face (dates will vary depending on your state). Entry conditions 

There are no prerequisites required for entry to the Certificates, so anyone can study.

The Certificate fee includes the six short courses scheduled above and: 

  • a discount on the Certificate if purchased in full 

  • a downloadable soft copy of the course materials prior to each short course 

  • access to course materials and online exam for each course (exams must be completed within 12 months) 

  • eligibility to apply for Membership of Governance Institute 

  • Morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea.  Please advise us of dietaries when registering

Graduation & Membership 

If you complete the Certificate and pass the corresponding online exams, you’ll be eligible to apply for Affiliated membership and gain the nationally recognised postnominal GIA(Affiliated). You will receive a PDF copy of your certificate and academic record 21 days after completion of your last exam.
