This Governance and Risk Update is a new event format designed to keep members informed and connected in 2026. This timely briefing will provide members with expert insight, practical experience and peer discussion to help members stay ahead of a rapidly evolving governance and risk landscape.
The event will open with a focused update on key developments shaping today’s governance and risk landscape, including governance, culture and accountability, cyber, AI and digital governance, and the ongoing challenge of financial crime. This session will equip members with a clear understanding of the most significant regulatory, technological and cultural shifts, highlighting what has changed, what is emerging, and what it means in practice for organisations and professionals.
Drawing on real-world experience, these leaders will explore how expectations around governance, accountability and risk are evolving in response to increasing regulatory scrutiny, digital disruption and financial crime risks. The discussion will focus on how organisations are strengthening culture and accountability, navigating cyber and AI governance challenges, and responding to financial crime obligations. Participants will gain practical insights, decision-making considerations and lessons learned, bridging the gap between theory and practice.

Gaby Carney, Senior Fellow, Strategic AI, Human Technology Institute, University of Technology Sydney

Gaby Carney is a Senior Fellow at the UTS Human Technology Institute where she advises on AI corporate governance and the safe and responsible use of AI. Gaby is a lawyer and policy expert with extensive experience in legal and regulatory policy, and governance. She has been a Partner of management consulting firm, Partners in Performance and has held senior executive roles in the NSW Government.
Katrina Sharman, Special Counsel, Piper Alderman
With over 20 years’ post admission experience across Australia and the United States, Katrina combines private practice pedigree with senior in house leadership. Her career spans litigation, regulatory compliance, policy advisory and emerging technologies, including executive roles as General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer at high-growth fintech and crypto companies.
Katrina provides pragmatic, regulatory-focused guidance on digital-asset products, financial-services licencing, AML/CTF obligations, consumer protection, enterprise risk and global compliance strategy, with a core practice in crypto advisory. She works closely with product, engineering, compliance and executive teams in crypto and AI-driven financial services businesses. Notably, Katrina spent close to six years at the United States’ largest digital asset exchange, Coinbase, leading product life cycle counselling for consumer and payments products. She has also advised California-based fintechs on product launches, regulatory matters, policy positioning and fundraising. Her earlier experience managing complex insurance and professional indemnity disputes underpins a risk aware, commercial approach.
