Capability Framework
Capabilities go beyond basic skills and knowledge. They include a person’s overall abilities, such as the mindset and cognitive skills, needed to adapt and succeed now and in the future.
Developing capability frameworks helps organisations and professions enhance individuals’ ability and the workforce to respond to changes and future challenges.
Why are we implementing a Governance Capability Framework?
As the sole Australian provider of chartered governance accreditation, Governance Institute of Australia has a rich history of empowering professionals through education.
By developing new pathways to expertise and excellence in governance and risk management, the Governance Academy is responding to the needs of our members and students as they forge careers in an ever-changing workplace landscape.
Based on extensive evidence and research, the Governance Capability Framework will support:
- • More flexible options for our students
- • Greater opportunities to obtain governance credentials backed by high quality courses and academic rigour.
- • The definition and benchmarking of requirements needed by governance professionals to meet current and future workforce needs.
- • Life-long career development and stronger community connection through the advancement of governance and risk management as a profession.

They seek to understand core principles and technical information to apply to their practice. They contribute meaningfully to their organisations by following established processes and procedures and can take the lead on specific initiatives when working within defined parameters.
Established
Those at established level possess a breadth and depth of understanding of the knowledge, skills and behaviours required within the capability area and can articulate and apply them in various contexts with confidence. They demonstrate a high level of independence, initiative, and ownership in their work, exercising good judgment in increasingly complex and dynamic environments and proactively seek solutions to challenges that arise. They are trusted advisors to their colleagues and serve as role models to less experienced governance professionals. They are alert to external influences that may affect their organisation.
Expert
Those at expert level possess advanced understanding of the knowledge, skills and behaviours required within the capability area and are recognised as subject matter experts within their organisation or industry. They have a comprehensive grasp of both theoretical underpinnings and emerging trends, enabling them to integrate new developments seamlessly into their practice. They are self-directed and proactive and play a valued part in shaping the trajectory of their organisation, influencing strategic decisions, and driving meaningful change and progress. They are frequently consulted and often lead highly complex initiatives. They actively mentor other governance professionals, both within their organisation and externally. They are seen from outside their organisation as leaders in governance.
