This Governance and Risk Update is a new event format designed to keep members informed and connected in 2026. This timely briefing will provide members with expert insight, practical experience and peer discussion to help members stay ahead of a rapidly evolving governance and risk landscape.

The event will open with a focused update on key developments shaping today’s governance and risk landscape, including governance, culture and accountability, cyber, AI and digital governance, and the ongoing challenge of financial crime. This session will equip members with a clear understanding of the most significant regulatory, technological and cultural shifts, highlighting what has changed, what is emerging, and what it means in practice for organisations and professionals.

Drawing on real-world experience, these leaders will explore how expectations around governance, accountability and risk are evolving in response to increasing regulatory scrutiny, digital disruption and financial crime risks. The discussion will focus on how organisations are strengthening culture and accountability, navigating cyber and AI governance challenges, and responding to financial crime obligations. Participants will gain practical insights, decision-making considerations and lessons learned, bridging the gap between theory and practice.

The Governance and Risk is designed to be informative, relevant and practical, providing members with confidence, clarity and connection as they move into the second half of the year.

Speakers

Alex Jenkins, Chair – Curtin AI In Research, Curtin University & Director, WA Data Science Innovation Hub

Alex Jenkins is Director of the Western Australian Data Science Innovation Hub (WADSIH) at Curtin University, where he leads the state's premier organisation for AI and data science capability building. He serves as a member of the Western Australian Government's AI Advisory Board, advising the Department of the Premier and Cabinet on AI policy and adoption, and chairs the Curtin AI in Research Group (CAIR), guiding the university's research community on accelerating their impact with AI.

His work focuses on the translational impact of AI across industry, education, and public policy — bridging the gap between research and real-world adoption. He is particularly focussed in how AI can deliver measurable outcomes in education and health, and in shaping the policy settings needed to support responsible, sovereign AI capability in Australia.

Nathan Lynch, Financial Crime Consultant, AML Shield

Nathan Lynch is one of Australia's foremost experts in financial crime, with more than 20 years of experience investigating money laundering, organised crime, and terrorism financing across the Asia-Pacific region.

He has trained police, government officials and bankers across Asia and the Middle East on the techniques the world's criminals use to conceal and clean their dirty money.

As the former Asia-Pacific head of financial crime and risk at a major technology company, Nathan led a team of investigators, lawyers and former regulators, tracking financial crime threats and illicit money flows across the region. His investigative work has uncovered some of the most significant money laundering cases in Australia, involving banks, casinos, real estate and bullion dealers.

Nathan is the author of "The Lucky Laundry," a critically acclaimed book examining how Australia's property market became a magnet for dirty money.

He was recognised with Macquarie University's Financial Crime Fighter of the Year award in 2022 for his work advocating for federal law reform to combat serious organised crime in Australia.
