Micro-credentials: A New Era in Professional Development

In today’s rapidly evolving workplace, professional skills can soon become obsolete. In order to keep up with changing demands, shorter, cheaper and more practical credentials are required.

Micro-credentials are concise, certification-style courses designed to enhance proficiency in a particular area of study within a shorter timeframe.

Designed for individuals seeking to upskill or gain new knowledge at an advanced level without the commitment of a longer-term degree or post-graduate course, Governance Academy offers these credentials with a reputable, quality-assured approach, providing digital badges upon successful completion.

Micro-credentials are more complex than short courses but less intensive than postgraduate subjects. They are designed for self-paced learning to be completed within an eight-week timeframe.

Micro-credentials can be taken individually or as part of a Bundle. Completion of a Micro-credential will also qualify you for conditional admission to the Graduate Certificate of Applied Corporate Governance and Risk Management.

They are aligned with AQF Level 8 and cater to those at the established proficiency level within the Capability Framework.

A: The Micro-credentials within each Bundle are specifically chosen to work together, with the learning outcomes and assessments designed to meet particular achievements. As a result, you’ll need to complete the designated micro-credentials in each Bundle to earn the qualification.

Q: Can I register in more than one Micro-credential at a time to complete a Bundle in less than two years?

A: Absolutely! You can register in multiple micro-credentials that are part of your Bundle. Each Micro-credential requires 42 hours of independent learning and an assessment within 8 weeks, so you have the flexibility to complete them at a pace that works best for you.

Q: How do I explain Micro-credentials to my employer?

A: Micro-credentials are for established governance professionals looking for something more than a short course to sink their teeth into. They offer a deeper level of understanding and knowledge, more in-depth learning connected to their work practice. They are also aligned to the Australian Qualifying Framework at Level 8, which is similar to a Graduate certificate or graduate diploma level course.

Q: Are Micro-credentials an extension of Governance Institute’s postgraduate course?

A: No. Micro-credentials offering a distinct and specialised learning experience that sit between short courses and postgraduate courses that focus on specific skills and capabilities making them a practical way to gain expertise quickly.

A: Micro-credentials focus on specific learning outcomes with a different volume of content, so they are not directly aligned with postgraduate subjects in terms of credit. However, completion of a Micro-credential will enable you to apply for the postgraduate course if you have previously been ineligible.

Q: Why does your course catalogue state Micro-credentials start at 8 am on the commencement date of each month?

A: Registered students gain access to course material on Blackboard at 8 am (AEDT/AEST) on the start date. The study is flexible and self-paced, with no live class facilitation, allowing you to begin whenever is most convenient for you.
