The National AI Centre (NAIC) recently hosted a thought-provoking webinar on AI ethics, featuring Governance Institute CEO, Megan Motto FGIA FCG. The session explored key ethical considerations in AI governance, aligning with findings from the latest Ethics Index.

With AI’s rapid adoption across industries, the webinar delved into critical issues such as the role of organisational leaders in building trust, gender differences in AI concerns and the influence of social media on AI perceptions. Megan Motto spoke about the importance of transparency, accountability and ethical leadership in ensuring AI aligns with societal values.

Some notable findings from last year’s report include:

  • 35% of Australians view AI as ethically challenging – this highlights public concern about AI governance.
  • Women are more likely than men to perceive AI as being unethical
  • Trends over time show a decline in AI trust – the Ethics Index indicates that perceptions of AI ethics have been worsening over the years.

Discussions also highlighted the need to balance AI risks with its potential benefits. Attendees gained insights into the AI Safety Standard and the AI Impact Navigator, key frameworks for organisations looking to integrate responsible AI practices.

As AI continues to evolve, these conversations are essential in shaping responsible and sustainable AI strategies.
