In early December 2019, a package of bills was reintroduced to the Commonwealth Parliament that will create a new Commonwealth business registry regime and introduce a Director Identification Number.

Modernising business registers formed part of the New Deregulation Agenda included in the Commonwealth Government’s 2019–20 Mid‑Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook, which was released on 16 December 2019.

The government’s Modernising Business Registers Project team is currently working on the new technology platform to deliver the new register and implement Director Identification Numbers. The project aims to:

  • Create a contemporary digital registry platform
  • Implement registers on the platform and transition users to them
  • Decommission the legacy systems.
