Core values are the guiding tenets of a company. They are timeless, enduring, and intrinsically valuable. Core values support the company's vision, shape the culture, and reflect the company's identity. One core value is company culture. Much is said about culture, especially now. It’s being scrutinised more than ever as its impact becomes apparent in the decisions people make.

The August issue of Governance Directions featured articles about trust and social licence. Social licence is one dimension of the culture, risk and trust conversations that are being had by consumers, regulators, media, employees and especially in the boardroom.

Now, I am uncomfortable with the idea that business morals and personal morals are different. Remember what your grandmother taught you in the backyard? Treat others how you want to be treated. Good businesses operate the same way as a good individual. A person who takes a win-lose approach to their relationships soon finds they are lonely. So too will a business.
