President's commentary — Standing up and speaking out

As governance professionals, we are living in interesting times. As I write, the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority’s (APRA) Final Report of the Prudential Inquiry into the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) has just been released, four directors, including the chair, have resigned from the AMP board, and the Hayne royal commission still has months to run.

Have recent events called for a reappraisal of the role of company secretaries and governance professionals more broadly? It is common for governance professionals to hold institutional knowledge, regulatory awareness, and to be continuously engaged in ensuring best practice. Should we be more proactive? Should we be disruptors when disruption is called for? Are we ready for the increased focus on governance related matters?
