Australia’s charities employed almost 1.3 million paid staff in 2016, equivalent to around 10.6 per cent of the Australia workforce, according to the Australian Charities Report 2016.
However, a high proportion of these staff members were engaged on a part-time (35 per cent) or casual basis (27 per cent). Larger organisations were more likely than others to employ full-time staff. And, just under half of all charities operated with no paid staff at all.
