Networking with old friends and connections at National Conference 2021

As Governance Institute of Australia’s National Conference fast approaches, many familiar faces will be joining the annual event ‘virtually’, attending key-note sessions and panels.

The two-day event will include 18 sessions and attendees will hear from more than 45 global thought leadership speakers and participate in networking and social opportunities.

University of New England Dean of Law and Professor of Corporate Law Michael Adams will be among the attendees and says the event provides an outstanding opportunity to hear the latest trends in governance.

As a Governance Institute past president and now a brand ambassador, Professor Adams also enjoys the chance to network with national and international leaders across a range of sectors.

‘Over the last 20 years I have attended, the annual conference has become more engaging with a broader discipline-based approach,’ he says.

‘The old friends and connections with Governance Institute get stronger and I still enjoy meeting new friends.’

Professor Adams says by sharing best practice and experiences from a variety of sectors attendees were able to learn that every profession is under similar pressures.

‘We are all in this together, many different industries have similar approaches, we can continue to learn and develop best practices to secure our organisations from risk and harm,’ he said.

This year’s conference tagline ‘culture powers purpose’ defines the governance required to manage the economic and social disruption occurring on a global scale.

As a leader and manager Professor Adams defines risk management in a modern era as ‘so much more than just following the rules’.

‘Compliance must come alive to make the difference — corporate governance is driven by strategy and that is only developed out of a clear culture,’ he said.

‘Corporate culture is very complex and will vary from the board down through various departments or entities with an organisation. This is where the complexity arrives and purpose overall must be clear for every industry and profession.’

Governance Institute of Australia’s National Conference 2021 will be held virtually on Wednesday September 1 and Thursday September 2. You can register below.
