Volunteer governance opportunities

Governance Institute is pleased to offer a complimentary web listing service for Not-for-Profit organisations requiring assistance in their governance practices. Many NFP organisations would benefit from help from qualified Governance Institute members and we encourage members to offer their support. Please note that these organisations are generally seeking volunteers; however, independent consultants or governance advisers may wish to discuss opportunities with the organisation to quote for the work required.

Mito Foundation, based in Sydney, NSW, is seeking a volunteer Company Secretary to assist with ensuring the company complies with its statutory obligations under any relevant laws and regulations. Your commitment will include coordination of, and attendance at four quarterly board meetings and the annual general meeting every year, plus other compliance tasks from time to time. YWCA Australia is seeking to recruit up to four appropriately skilled professionals to join their Finance, Audit, Risk, Governance and Investment Committee, to support the organisation during a period of growth and transition. This is a volunteer position that may be based anywhere in Australia. It is anticipated that around 2-3 hours per month is required. They are seeking to recruit individuals with some (or all) of the following skills, financial accounting, hotel management, funds/ share management or auditing. Further detail on eligibility criteria or to apply please visit the YWCA website. YWCA Australia is seeking to recruit up to four appropriately skilled professionals to join their Property Assets Committee, to support the organisation during a period of growth and transition. This is a volunteer position that may be based anywhere in Australia. It is anticipated that around 2-3 hours per month is required. They are seeking to recruit individuals with some (or all) of the following skills; affordable/social housing, property maintenance asset management, urban development and planning or residential development. Hear For You, based in the Hearing Hub at Macquarie University in Sydney, is seeking a volunteer Company Secretary to assist the Board and the organisation with ensuring that its best practice corporate governance is maintained and, as it grows, continues to comply with its statutory obligations. Your commitment will include coordination of and attendance at four quarterly board meetings and the annual general meeting (including the preparation of Board papers and taking minutes), plus other occasional compliance tasks. They are seeking candidates with Board experience and one or more of the following skills: Non-Executive Director, CEO or Senior Executive level experience, strong capabilities in strategic thinking, monitoring financial and non-financial performance, and corporate governance, and the personal attributes to effectively meet regulatory fitness and propriety requirements. Experience in the not-for-profit sector, understanding of early learning and out-of-school hours care environments, and a personal network, which leverages outcomes for the organisation is desirable. The Chair will represent the Board in its accountability to members and stakeholders, lead the Board and cooperate closely with the CEO to shape the organisation’s future direction. The ideal candidate will have significant industry experience within government, health or community services; significant governance experience; and a demonstrated ability to lead and communicate change in an evolving operating environment. Sandringham & District Historical Society Inc. based in suburban Melbourne, VIC, is seeking a volunteer Secretary to ensure compliance with legal and Society Rule obligations. This local history society is a not-for-profit organisation updating its governance practices. You will be supported by a Treasurer and another two volunteers who attend to minutes and membership.  Your commitment is a once a month attendance at Committee meetings as well as calling members' meetings.
