AI Corporate Governance in action: the challenges and opportunities for Australian organisations
UTS Human Technology Institute which is headed by Ed Santow has partnered with Governance Institute to host a roundtable on:
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) can present significant opportunities and risks for Australian organisations and the broader community. There is significant demand within Australian companies and NFPs for more information, and discussion, about these issues. HTI has released several publications to improve capability within Australian organisations as part of its AI Corporate Governance program. As part of this work, it has articulated the essential elements of an AI corporate governance framework with a particular focus on company directors. The proposed series of workshops would focus on building capability in AI corporate governance within Australian companies (at the board and/or senior executive level). They could be focused on a particular segment, such as SMEs and/or NFPs. These would be small workshops that would provide attendees with the opportunity to engage in a more in-depth discussion about best practice in AI corporate governance, the challenges they are facing and the potential opportunities. As the Australian Government announces its initiatives in AI regulation, these could be incorporated into the discussion.
- Part 1: A high level overview of the use of AI in Australian organisations; the board or executive role in relation to AI technologies; and any recent updates in Australian regulation re AI
- Part 2: The main elements of AI corporate governance, and a discussion amongst directors of the current challenges they are facing in relation to AI, and what they are doing to implement the corporate governance required to harness the opportunities of AI technologies in a responsible way.

Gaby Carney, Fellow, UTS Human Technology Institute
Gaby Carney is a Fellow at the UTS Human Technology Institute where she is working on AI corporate governance and advising on the safe and responsible use of AI. Gaby is a lawyer and policy expert with extensive experience in legal and regulatory policy, and governance. She has been a Partner of management consulting firm, Partners in Performance and has held senior executive roles in the NSW Government
Llewellyn Spink, AI Corporate Governance Specialist, UTS Human Technology Institute
Llewellyn Spink is the AI Corporate Governance Specialist at UTS Human Technology Institute. He works to build capability within Australian organisations on AI governance through the AI Corporate Governance Program. Previously, Llewellyn was a senior lawyer in government and private practice, including at the Australian Human Rights Commission, where he developed industry-focused guidance on the impact of AI on human rights.
