Career progression involves substantial planning before one can make an informed decision about their career pathway. When stepping up or into a new role, it is important for an individual to find a role that meets their interests, talents, capabilities, and skills.

Governance professionals advise and support the board (or governing body) in areas such as legal and regulatory changes, risk management, financial reporting, and environmental impact assessment and reporting, balancing the interests of the board, management, and other stakeholders.

Depending on the organisation, governance practitioners can have a wide range of position titles. They may be called Company Secretary, General Counsel, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Governance Officer, or Chief Risk Officer.

Speakers:

Robin Bates - General Counsel & Company Secretary, Metro Mining; Founder/Director, Bella the Brave

Robin is a seasoned senior executive, legal practitioner and governance professional, bringing over two decades of comprehensive expertise across diverse sectors such as listed companies, not-for-profits, statutory authorities, tertiary education and private practice. Robin is currently serving as the Company Secretary and General Counsel at Metro Mining Ltd, an ASX listed company. Beyond her corporate responsibilities, Robin is also the founder and one of the directors of Bella the Brave, a charity which raises awareness and funds to support research into childhood brain cancer.

Robin holds an Honours Degree in Law and has also completed the Governance Institute of Australia's Graduate Diploma in Applied Corporate Governance. She has been conferred with the title of Fellow by the Governance Institute of Australia and is also a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, demonstrating her commitment to high standards of corporate governance.

Minali Gamage FGIA - Group Manager, Audit & Risk, Northern Star Resources

Minali is a governance professional with over 18 years experience in risk management, internal audit, process improvement, business continuity and project management. Working with leading organisations as a management consultant at EY, then subsequently taking in-house risk and audit roles in mining and utilities, her balance of business and IT acumen provides valuable insights and pragmatic recommendations to organisations. Recently she has enjoyed applying her expertise to governance, advocacy and advisory roles in the arts. She is currently GM Audit & Risk at Northern Star Resources and a Director of the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts.

Tania Sargent - State Chair, Governance Institute

After starting her working life as a Chartered Accountant in public practice, for the next 30 + years Tania has held several senior finance, governance and general management roles in Disability Services, Education, Health, Retail and Financial Services. Tania was the Director of Corporate Services for Westminster School until 2021, a large independent co-education day and boarding school, with direct responsibility and oversight of Finance, ICT, Property Services, Legal, Governance and Risk, whilst also acting as the Public Officer for the School Council. Tania also held the role of Company Secretary - 1414 Degrees Ltd, a listed clean energy company based in South Australia (2021 - 2022) and is currently the company secretary for the Lutheran Laypeople’s League (‘LLL’) (since October 2021).

Tania has also completed her term as a member and Chair of the State Council for the Governance Institute and acts as a Mentor for the University of South Australia in their Executive Partners Program.

Theo Kapodistrias

Theo Kapodistrias is a multi-award-winning lawyer, based in Hobart, Tasmania. He is the General Counsel at Evergen - an energy management software company. He has been recognised for his work in the legal and community space winning several awards including the Lawyers Weekly 30 under 30 Award in 2017 and 2018, the Academic, Education and Training Lawyer of the Year at the 2018 Corporate Counsel Awards, the Young Lawyer of the Year at the 2020 Law Society of Tasmania Awards, and has been named one of Australia's Most Influential Lawyers by the Australasian Lawyer Magazine in both 2022 and 2023. He is a Non-Executive Director of the Association of Corporate Counsel Australia and Business Events Tasmania. In ACC Australia, he is also the Tasmanian Divisional President and Chair of the Sole Legal Officer Special Interest Group.
