Course overview

Governance Institute short courses address capabilities at the emerging level, offering practical learning supported by professional qualifications and experience. 

Environmental & Social Governance (ESG) is an external framework used by investors and stakeholders to assess a company’s performance considering three key areas: environmental, social, and governance practices 

  • Environmental: Evaluates a company’s impact on the environment, including climate change, resource depletion, pollution, and waste management practices. 
  • Social: Focuses on a company’s relationships with its people and society, including labour practices, diversity and inclusion, community engagement, human rights, and product safety. 
  • Governance: Assesses the effectiveness of a company’s leadership, board structure, risk management practices, ethical conduct, and transparency. 

Short course structure

This course has 3 sections, each section is focused on both the course topic and one of the domains of the Governance Capability Framework (also detailed below):

  • Section A is focused on the Governance Principles related to the topic (defined as technical principles relating to what a governance professional does). This section is primarily theoretical and instructional.
  • Section B is focused on Professional Practices related to the topic (defined as how a person works and interacts with others). This section includes exploration of the actions, collaborations, and interactions required of professionals in governance roles in this topic area.
  • Section C is focused on Personal Thinking related to the topic (defined as how a person thinks or behaves). This section is the most active component of the course with discussions, activities, and a case study requiring interaction with course content and peers.

Key learning objectives

  • Define and explain the three pillars of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance). 
  • Analyse the impact of ESG on businesses, investors, and stakeholders. 
  • Develop critical thinking skills to apply ESG concepts to real-world scenarios. 


Assessment for this course consists of: 

  • Knowledge checks as you progress, 
  • Multiple choice quiz questions, and 
  • A short, written response to a real-world case study.

Dr. Kaushik Sridhar is an experienced and purpose driven corporate sustainability leader with over 18 years’ experience developing and implementing sustainability and environmental, social and governance (ESG) programs, strategies, and initiatives focusing on improving business’ financial bottom line and contribution to society while reducing their environmental impacts.  

His previous industry experience includes working in senior ESG roles at large corporations (ASX and private), and global consulting firms where he has built and led multi-million-dollar and award-winning sustainability programs & strategies.
