What is a Micro-credential?

A Micro-credential is an eight-week online course comprising 42 hours of study that is aligned to a specific capability from the Governance Capability Framework. Micro-credentials are a great option for those unable to undertake a full postgraduate subject, but who want something more substantial than a short course.

What Micro-credential options are there?

A Micro-credential is studied online over a scheduled eight-week period with a set start and end date.

You may also choose to enrol in a prescribed set of four Micro-credentials to complete a Micro-credential Bundle.

What is a Micro-credential Bundle?

A Micro-credential Bundle is a prescribed set of four Micro-credentials that are packaged together to provide a comprehensive learning experience in a particular area or field, leading to a more significant credential.

Where can I register for a Micro-credential or a Micro-credential Bundle?

You can register for a Micro-credential or bundle online at any time during the year, with study commencing on the scheduled start date. View the course catalogue for all Micro-credential and bundle study options.

How do I access my course materials?

The course materials are available in our learning management system, Blackboard. Your Micro-credential access period will officially start and finish as per the published start and finish dates.

Do I need to print my course materials?

No. Micro-credentials are designed to be interactive and engaging and are completed within the learning management system. You will experience a combination of multimedia content, case studies, practical activities, and discussions to enhance your learning. Downloadable PDFs of core content will be available.

How will I learn?

A Micro-credential is offered over eight (8) weeks of self-paced, online study that does not require attendance at online classes, During your eight weeks of study, support will be available from an academic moderator who will answer any questions you have about the course content.

Is there an assessment component for a Micro-credential?

Yes. Each Micro-credential includes an assessment which you must successfully pass to earn the credential and receive a digital badge. See the Micro-credential Assessment Policy for further information.

When will I receive feedback on my assessment?

Assessments will be graded within 14 days of the due date. If you submit your assessment early, it will still be marked within the same 14-day window from the due date to ensure consistency in grading and feedback for all students. You can view your assessor feedback and grades in the Blackboard Grade Centre.

How long do I have to complete a Micro-credential?

You have 8 weeks to complete a Micro-credential. Your access begins on the date the course commences, and the assessment is due on the final day of the course. This date may be extended in special circumstances – refer to the Micro-credential Assessment Policy for more information.

How do I view my study progress?

Your progress is tracked through the learning management system, Blackboard and you can view your grades in the Blackboard Grade Centre. Your Academic Record can be viewed by logging in to the website Home – Governance Institute of Australia.

Do I need any qualifications or experience to enrol in micro-credentials?

No. As Micro-credentials are open entry, there are no educational or experience prerequisites for enrolment. However, Micro-credentials are aligned to Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) level 8 and so are designed to reflect the advanced knowledge and skills required at a postgraduate level of study. As such, participants should be prepared for a rigorous learning process.

How long do I have to complete a Micro-credential bundle?

To graduate with a Micro-credential bundle, you must complete and pass the assessment for each of the four Micro-credentials within a two-year period. This two-year period starts on the day you start your first Micro-credential.

What is a digital badge?

A digital badge will be issued to learners upon successful completion of a Micro-credential or bundle. Digital badges provide a verifiable and shareable record of your achievement, similar to a physical testamur or certificate, and can be displayed on your LinkedIn profile, resume, or other platforms to showcase your qualifications to employers or peers.

Is my Micro-credential qualification recognised if I enrol in Governance Institute’s postgraduate courses?

Students who complete a Micro-credential will be eligible for conditional admission into the Graduate Certificate of Applied Corporate Governance and Risk Management course. Refer to the Admissions Policy for details Academic policies – Governance Institute of Australia.
