Qualifying & applying for Associate or Fellow membership

Qualifying

The criteria outlined below must be satisfied before you can become a Associate or Fellow Member. To apply for Associate or Fellow membership, you must be residing in Australia.

Education

You need to have either:

  • successfully completed the Graduate Diploma of Applied Corporate Governance
  • successfully completed six (6) single subjects for the Graduate Diploma of Applied Corporate Governance, or successfully completed five (5) single subjects for the Graduate Diploma in Company Secretarial Practice* or
  • successfully completed the Advanced Certificate in Risk Management.

* The Graduate Diploma in Company Secretarial Practice has been superseded by the Graduate Diploma of Applied Corporate Governance and is no longer offered, but will still be recognised for the purposes of qualifying for membership. 

Note: Governance Institute highly recommends that those who are studying with Governance Institute join the subscriber program, as the associated benefits greatly assist with study.

Experience

There are two levels of membership in this category: Associate (AGIA) and Fellow (FGIA). Fellowship is the higher level, indicating greater experience and levels of seniority / responsibility.

Election as an Associate

Election as an Associate requires at least six years relevant experience*, or periods totalling at least six years, in one or more positions in the governance area.

*Please note: The six-year qualifying period may be reduced by up to three years, where you have one of the following:

  • a degree from a university that the Governance Institute Council considers of suitable academic standing
  • a diploma or other certificate that is nationally recognised as being equivalent to a university degree
  • a professional qualification that the Governance Institute Council recognises as warranting a reduction
  • or alternatively, completion of other professional development that the Governance Institute Council considers as warranting a reduction.

Election as a Fellow

Election as a Fellow requires at least eight years relevant experience**, or periods totalling at least eight years. In addition, for three of the last ten years, you must have been one of the following:

  • a company secretary or assistant company secretary
  • a senior executive or in an administrative position that, in the Governance Institute Council’s view, has the same status as a Company Secretary or Assistant Company Secretary
  • a senior academic in a university, or other higher or further education body
  • a Member in public practice
  • or alternatively, completion of other professional development considered as relevant by the Governance Institute Council.

**Please note: The eight-year qualifying period may be reduced by up to three years, where you have one of the following:

  • A degree from a university that the Governance Institute Council considers of suitable academic standing
  • A diploma or other certificate that is nationally recognised as being equivalent to a university degree
  • A professional qualification that the Governance Institute Council recognises as warranting a reduction
  • Or alternatively, completion of other professional development that the Governance Institute Council considers as warranting a reduction.

Character and good standing

Members are required to be of good character and agree to abide by the Code of Professional Ethics and Conduct.

Applying

When you have completed your studies and your results have been confirmed (approximately eight to ten weeks after your final exam), you will be invited to apply for election to membership.

Once you have completed the Graduate Diploma of Applied Corporate Governance and elected, you will be entitled to use the designation ‘Chartered Secretary’ and the postnominals AGIA, ACIS or FGIA, FCIS.

Once you have completed the Advanced Certificate in Risk Management and elected, you will be entitled to use the postnominals AGIA or FGIA.
